Rangers v. Dundee Utd.

First home game tomorrow and I for one cannot wait. It will have a few goals and in front of a packed house it should be some atmosphere, so without further ado here is my predicted line up which is pretty obvious based on last weeks performance

----------------------------------Leitzi---------------------------------------

Hutton-------------Svennson-------J Rod-----------------------Smith

------------------Hemdani--------------Clement--------------------

Sionko----------------------Buffel---------------------------Adam

------------------------------Prso-----------------------------------

I can see the formation changing during the game most probably in the 2nd half when Boyd and possibly Sebo will come on and revert to 4-4-2 with Buffel coming off and Boyd and Sebo playing upfront. Prso though will tire the defence allowing the front 2 to terroroise the defence and get a goal or 2 , hopefully more. I am hoping for another big performance from Adam and I have full faith that he will shine.
So enjoy the game and heres hoping for lots of goals for us.

Sebo has signed.

And its Thursday and it seems now that Sebo has signed at last following the most annoyingly protracted transfer since a certain Greek defender joined last year lets just hope Sebo turns out to be a wee bit better. Not hard I know. But at least he was keen to come to us which was not the case with Soti and now we have another seemingly decent striker we are somewhat spoiled for choice up front and that can only be a good thing when you look at the poverty of resources over the past 4 years or so. So welcome to Ibrox Filip heres to happy times ahead!

So what else then of note? Well the Scotland squad for the get together was announced yesterday and rightly so there was quite a contingent of Gers players at full and U21 level and lets hope our boys make the squad and team for next months double header and perhaps some of the youngers guys like Stevie Smith can make the stewp up to the full squad too. One note of caution is the inclusion of Ian Murray. How he gets in is beyond me, he is only reserve team pedigree at Rangers in my opinion and another we could do without. I suspect his signing was a case of the old pals act coming into play as he was at Hibs under big Eck and quite frankly he has done little to merit a place on the bench let alone the top team, perhaps a move is best for him and the club.

Right thats yer lot, I don't know if its lack of news or writers block...I'll let you make up your own mind.

Makign the Cut - PLG Edition

The main talking point today in the aftermath of Sundays performance is who is going to drop out if anyone and when I say that I am referring to Charlie Adams chances of staying in the team for Saturdays game against Dundee Utd. I feel he should stay and I suspect he will and deservedly so. He was named man of the match by Gus McPherson on Radio Scotland and by all accounts was the best performer in a blue shirt and he really should stay in the side based on that performance. If anyone will drop out it will be Prso to be replaced by Boyd who is returning from suspension but even then I cannot see that happening due to Prso scoring and also his style of play brings a lot to the team even if Boyd is a better goalscorer. Therefore I say keep it the same but bring Boyd on after an hour once Prso has tired out the defence then unleash Boyd on them and I am certain we will see more goals.

It is now a matter of time before Sebo joins us any day I should think and hopefully Le Guens eye for talent will pay off once again, having not seen the guy in action at all, I am not going to comment on his ability but I have full faith in PLG's opinion when it comes to players. If only we had him tied up earlier rather than this protracted process we have seen these past few weeks, in truth both clubs are to blame here but come on rangers get it over with and lets get on with winning the title and performing well in Europe!

A Good Start - Part 2

A good start to the competeive PLG era yesterday. Fir Park is not an easy venue to go to at the best of times and although there were many chances missed in forthcoming games we will put more of them away given the right service and composure from whoever hits the shot. Although Buffel missed a few he is not an out and out striker so he can be forgiven but hopefully this is one area of his game that he will work on and improve. Sadly I missed the game due to my wallet going missing but its turned up now, I left it at a mates on Saturday so all is well on that score.

Onto other stuff now and first of all Libor Sionko is targetting the title and it is good to hear that kind of chat from the new guys. In the past you got the impression that some players were happy to pick up the money with no ambitions for the team, so come on lads lets go for it and bring the title home to where it belongs.

Fernando Ricksen returns to training tomorrow following his latest indiscretion and I can onlyhope that he gets over his problems soon. Problems like the ones he has are very difficult to get over and we can hope his recovery continues and he keeps fighting his demons. Darryl Broadfoot in the Herald wrote and excellent article you can read here:http://www.theherald.co.uk/sport/66850.html and it is an excellent article and one I am sure many Gers fans will agree with.

So to sum up then 3 points won and with Hearts and Celtic picking up wins it is good that we are level so far and hopefully we will not be level for long but pulling away at the top of the SPL where we belong. One bad thing was the singing of songs that will get us into trouble and I hope to god that on Saturday we do not have a repeat but on the whole the songs sung were good and we must rmember that it is possible to sing Rangers songs that don't go on about fenians and all that rubbish. Lets sing songs glorifying Rangers not ancient battles or post war figures from Bridgeton.

We Win With PLG! - July 30, 2006

Winning away from home to start off a campaign in a new league - a new nation - a new home - may just be the most normal accurance so far in the saga of Le Gaffer.

The Gers took home a 2-1 victory over Motherwell at Fir Park this afternoon which led to a collective sigh of relief from loyal Bears and Bearettes all over the globe. But, winning is nothing new for Le Guen. Having to send a player to rehabilitation and remove a team from a lousy diet may be.

Fortunetly, the product on the pitch has a Le Guen marking on it already as we look fit and ready to take care of the business in acquiring league title number 52 this season. It is early in their campaign, but one must imagine that our work rate is up to par with any team in Europe. This surely increasing the chances of Rangers putting up a remarkable season in front of a fanbase needing success to wash away the taste of last season.

So, we are off then...into a season full of hopes and dreams...instead of curry.

No More Curry - July 26, 2006

So here we go another day another dollar and its starting to hot up now. Unless you play for Rangers and then you won't be hotting up curry style after the biryani oops sorry ban on curry. Now I feel that this is a mis tikka massalla oops sorry I mean't mistake, these puns are bad aren't they? I'd better get me coat hadn't I? Anyway in all seriousness curry is not the healthiest of dishes to eat and in this day of ultra fitness and athleticism diets like that have to be cut out and it goes to show that PLG knows what he is all about in terms of diet nutrition and all that. In fact Charlie Adam mentioned in the Heralds the other day that his diet has improved saying:

"I am eating more pasta and chicken now and am not eating late at night now" Now forgive me if you will for pointing out that this is a worrying comment to make. Surely to god he should have been aware that this is a good idea long ago and not just something he has just learned. How much is the club dietician earning from the club? He or she should have been drumming this into the players for a long time and it should be second nature. The coaches must bear some responsibility too in this, they are culpable too. PLG will sort this out I am sure of that and if heads have to roll so be it and if dsecisions such as banning curry are made then once again, so be it.

What else today then? Well Fellip Sebo seems like he will be joining le revolution in the net few days he has made it chrystal clear that he does not want to stay where he is he and it will be a case of goodnight Vienna within the net few days and as he says he wants to play in front of 50000 each week which will include me as I got my first ever season ticket yesterday so its the club deck for me. Anyway who can blame him for that as Ibrox is such a great ground with the best fans too.

Finally Alan Hutton has said he wants to make the right back position his own. Fair enough but he has to perform, at times last season he was abysmal and it has been the same in some of the pre season games as well so my message is 'sort your shit out and it will be yours but you must perform.

On that note I will leave it there. Au revoir

Five Days to Go! - July 25, 2006

So 5 days to go then and I for one cannot wait. Phoned up the club today and got my first ever season ticket in the club deck so I am well pumped about that and heres looking forward to the PLG era and good days ahead for the club.

Todays news of note has to be the news that this may well be Dado Prso's last as a footballer due to his knee injuries. This is a big blow for him and indeed Rangers as to my mind he has been our best forward in terms of all round play for some time and he will be a great loss if he calls it a day. He is a prime example that late developers can have a good career and while his early years were somewhat fruitless, he blossomed into a fine player and I am sure the vast majority of fans will wish him well and have fond memories of him in a blue shirt. The question now is who will replace him and will be interesting to see who does. As Bendtnar is not going to be loaned to us we are down one option and I would be surprised if Felip Sebo joins us too based on the postion that Austria Vienna have taken. I understand that they are looking out for their interests, but is it in their interests to keep a player who doesn't want to play for them? I think not. If the boot was on the other foot then I am sure that Rangers fans would want rid of unwilling players and rightly so.

Speaking of which Olivier Bernard played as a trialist for Sheffield Utd last night and lets hope to god something can be arranged to get this mercenary off the payroll and free up more cash to get players who want to be at Rangers even if its a bosman signing on big wages.

One thing i didn't touch on yesterday was David Murrays to sell up in a couple of years and I have to agree that 20 years is a hell of a long time to be at the helm of a club, especially one that has such an expectant support like we do and while he has made mistakes he has been wonderful for us and underwritten many a happy day and we should be very grateful to him for all he has done for the club. Hopefully we will get another excellent chairman and not an outsider who will make us a laughing stock like a certain Lithuanian and a certain wee guy with a bunnet who made his money in Canada.

ok thats yer lot folks, til tomorrow then.

Welcome to the New Season! - July 24, 2006

And a big welcome back to the daily blog courtesy of me its good to be back doing this now the season is about to start and I look forward to writing my daily words of wisdom this season so here goes.

The turnover of players has been one topic that has seen lots of debate over the close season. The players we have lost will, mostly not be missed I am referring mainly to Soti, Zura and the mullet whose erratic form did them no favours for the most part and it must be said that they will not be players fondly rmeebered years from now. Lovenkrands though I was sorry to see go as he scored many an important goal for us particularly in big games but then all too often he was nowhere to be found when things got tough. mind you a lot of the time he was playing on the wing which is not where he was at his most effective. Marvin Andrews did an honest job for us and while he is by no means the greatest centre back we have ever had he is not the worst I have seen in my years of watching the gers so a big thank you goes out to him too. Hopefully too some others will leave such as Novo, Malcolm, Fanfan and Bernard who are nowhere near Rangers class and less said about them the better I feel. Ricksen though will be on his way make no mistake about that he was out of order but on the other hand if he is having mental problems the club need to support him throughout but if its a case of him going back to his wild ways then we should cut our ties with him for good and free up the wage bill a bit.

The guys who have come in so far seem to be ok but as the saying goes the proof of the pudding is in the eating so lets just wait and see before we make an informed judgement.

The pre season results were good and it seems like the players did ok but I think that we should have tried to get stiffer opposition. Much as Linfield are a club we have good links with and we have such a loyal support over in Ulster they are not much of a test and I'd rather see us play higher level opposition but hey it could have been worse and the fans seemed to have a great day out and the atmosphere at Windsor Park was immense. Again lets see how it goes competeively before we get too excited. As for the Bolton fiasco, well what can I say? The Greater Manchester constabulary should take a long look at themselves over this. If there was a problem why didn't let it be known sooner rather than the last minute? The inconvenience caused was out of order and they have scored a major PR own goal with this and are guilty of double standards as they have no problem with other clubs who have an 'unsavoury' element in their support.

I was surprised at the seemingly lack of funds I thought we would have had more but I suppose a lot of that is down to the fact that we are not in the Champions league this season and we have to cut our cloth accordingly but to not go 200-300K higher to get aplayer smacks of the biscuit tin mentality of Celtic and I thought we were above that. In saying that though we only broke even last season with that Champions league rum so its better to play it safe than run up big losses again.

So expectation time then. I expect a good run in the UEFACup and us to win the league with at least one domestic cup too. Not too much to ask is it?

So here goes guys the ride may be bumpy but lets hope its an enjoyable one.

Peace out and follow follow!

Celtic Hides Against Hearts - April 30/2006

As expected Hearts beat Celtic today and we all knew that they would not try very hard today as they are still bitter about when Rangers have won the league by beating other teams when they have slipped up like in 2003 and last year as well. So now we have Hibs to face at Easter Road on Wednesday while Hearts face Aberdeen at Tynecastle on the same night. If Aberdeen win or draw then it gives us a chance but I fear now that it is all over and a UEFA cup spot is all we will get. Mind you a few months ago thats all we could get and the team should be applauded for clawing back a huge deficit, but even still it still sucks today that we look set to lose out on a Champions League spot if Hearts beat Aberdeen on Wednesday, mind you we have to beat Hibs at Easter Road which will not be easy even though Hibs have been on a slump for the past month and even beyond that. They of course lost 4-0 to Aberdeen yesterday so I guess maybe there is some hope for us mind you this is the pessemist in me speaking here. They have a few key players out, mind you so do we and we have more strength in depth than Hibs do, but the match is being played at Easter Road and if starts to go awry then I really do fear the worst as Easter Road is not always an easy venue to go to but on the other hand our worst results against Hibs this season have been at Ibrox so ho knows we'll see on Wednesday.

Onto the transfer speculation then and todays player is El Hadji Diouf. I know that Le Guen gave this player his debut and is one of many players he nurtured but he is one player I would not touch with a barge pole due to his off field antics and his all round disruptive behaviour which his current boss, Sam Allardyce has spoken out against recently. Added to this he has not scored many goals in fact his return of 4 goals in 27 games with another 6 appearances from the bench does not convince me that he is a player worth siging for football reasons. Hoever maybe coming back under Le Guens guidance might be the thing to get his career back on track and after the 2002 world cup he was saying how he would become one of the top ten strikers in the world in the wake of his subsequent move to Liverpool. That prediction became as laughable as Joe Paquales claim to be a top comedian and if he was to come I would expect him to be a success otherwise the sometimes unforgiving Ibrox crowd will let him know in no uncertain terms how they feel about him. This story incidentally is in the News of the Screws so this story will no doubt be garbage, a bit like the paper and its sister paper.

Ok thats yer lot folks.

#100 for Calgaryloyal! - April 29/2006

This is the 100th blog today and thankfully to mark the occasion it was a good win today for the Gers and what a way to make a top team comeback for big Marv. To go a goal behind and then come back from it and go on to get the 3 points is a sign of character and while I didn't see the game it still has to be said that this team does have some reslience about it, its just a shame that there hasn't been more of it shown this season.

I don't know how well Hutton played or why he was subbed but if it was due to another sub standard performance then that is not a good thing as there has been too many of those lately. In any case his replacement did the biz for us and maybe reminded us all of how useful he can be. If the man upstairs had anything do with his goals then we should do all we can to keep him, the more divine intervention the better I say!
As for Boyd, well I was always confident he would score today so thumbs up to him for that.
So as I didn't see the game I'm not sure what to talk about now so before I leave things, the latest player to be linked with a move to Rangers had better be good, the latest name is Libor Sionko of Austria Vienna reports say he is quite a good player but I just hope that Le Guens arrival is not going to signal the arrival of a load of mercenaries. However he has said that he is keen to make an impact like Lubo Moravcik made at Celtic Park so if he comes lets hope he is as good as if not better than Lubo, who was a bloody good player.
Have a good Saturday night folks.

Killie Time - April 28/2006

Tomorrows game against Killie is not going to be an easy one and while I am confident that this weekends top 6 SPL results will be to Rangers favour I can't help but feel a bit cautious and worried about how things will go particularly at Tynecastle. Celtic now have no motivation to go out of their way to win matches until the end of the season and will certain players try their best? I hate to sound paranoid but I would not be surprised to see a below par performance from Celtic, not that I will be watching their game of course.

So onto Rangers then and this is a great chance to put 3 points on the board and keep the pressure on Hearts. There are no injury worries apart from the obvious ones and it will no doubt be the same team that did fairly well last Sunday. I would like to see the youngsters getting a run out at some point too. 10 seconds is all Moses Ashikodi got against Celtic which was ridiculous and if things are going well then they should be given a run out so they get some exposure to first team football and it will be good for the fans too as well as giving PLG some food for thought. Danny N'Guessan is another who should play before the end of the season and so should Derek Carcary.

This is the team that will no doubt be playing tomorrow.

-------------------------------------Wattereus-------------------------------------------------

Hutton------------------J Rod----------------------Soti-----------------------------Smith

--------------------------------------Hemdani----------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------Rae--------------------------------------------------

Burke------------------------------Buffel------------------------------------Prso

-------------------------------------Boyd----------------------------------------------

Subs:Klos, Murray, Malcolm, A Rae, N'Guessan, Ashikodi, Novo

The same level of performance as last week with better finishing and creativity and Rangers will be fine. I can see Boyd getting a couple of goals and this could be one performance that could blow Killie away. So if you're going to the game enjoy, I will be watching it live over here so heres hoping.

Setanta - April 27/2006

Setanta today signed a new deal to broadcast live SPL games in a 4 year deal worth 54 mil. This is a great boost for the SPL and will mean more money for clubs and will hopefully keep the wolves away from certain doors. This season although bad for Rangers domestically at least has been good for Scottish football as a whole as more and more people are taking an interest again and hopefully deals like this will be commonplace in the future and will lead to a resurgence in Scottish football. The presentation on Setanta is good and they put other broadcasters with a bigger name and profile to shame, there were teething problems when they first started broadcasting Scottish games but now they have it sorted out its a good well put together program. So heres to a new era for the SPL lets hope that the momentum carries on.
A big thumbs up is due to Burkey and Boydy for their Kirin cup call ups, its a good opportunity for both players to get into the team for the Euro 2008 qualifiers and we could do a lot worse than have trhose guys in the squad and hopefully they will do themselves justice. I have every confidence that they will.

Arthur Numan has said he hopes that Le guen doesn't fill the squad with French players and must find a balance between French players and Scottish players. As he says when things are going well its all hunky dory but when it goes wrong it brings out the rumours of a clique culture in the dressing room as there wsas when things started to go wrong under Advocaat. Although he said these were unsubstantiated rumours at the time and were false it doesn't stop the papers speculating and writing crap about what is going on behind the scenes. Weall know what papers will do that stuff whether true or not.

So there we go the til tomorrow

Fergie Op - April 25/2006

So Barry Ferguson has finally had his operation on his ankle so he will now be out for 12-15 weeks and may miss the start of next season and that will include a possible Champions League qualifier. Its high time he had the operation and no its over and done with its a case of waiting for his return. The primary objective he will face is getting back into the team after Le Guens arrival and subsequent shopping spree. Le Guen although he will be aware of his ability will no doubt have everyone starting with a clean slate and I am sure that reputations will count for not a lot. Hopefully though he will come back sooner and be sable to play his usual pivotal part at the start of the season because we will need guys like Ferguson on the park to instill the Rangers spirit on the pitch.

On that I'll leave it there as I have a very busy morning,

til tomorrow

Part Two - April 24/2006

Part two:

Well that was better wasn't it? Ok Rangers didn't win but at least the team played well as a unit and there were some good performances too especially in the midfield engine room here Hemdani really shoed his class and Gavin Rae was back to doing what he does best and thats making tackles running with the ball and creating opportunities. The defence as well was superb and a big thumbs up goes to J Rod for his performance yesterday. He was cool, composed, didn't shirk a tackle and kept Hartson and Zurawski quiet for much of the game and as for the mullet well what can you say? The big man was immense and some of the saves he made were incerdible especially the one from Maloneys free kick. It truly was a world class save and if any teams were watching him they will be thinking that he will be a good signing for them whatever team he goes to next season.

Stevie Smith once again underlined his credentials at left back and he will have done his chances under PLG no harm whatsoever for next season and beyond. Left back is one position we can be happy with at the moment and is not where we need to bring an expensive import. Further down the left touchline, Dado Prso workrate and ability shone and while he was closely marked by Paul Telfer he certainly gave him a torrid time and the chance that he set up for Burke really should have been put away.
Speaking of Burke he was another who had a good game but was quilty of dithering on numerous occasions when he could have whipped in an early ball he and Hutton were both guilty of this when they combined on the right and the dithering that went on was unnecessary and who knos if they had got an early ball into the box who knows what could have happened.

As for Buffel and Boyd , well Buffel was snuffed out by Lennon and Keane and didn't have many opportunities to do something and as he does all too often, hid and its time he stopped that and started being a player who relishes the challenges that he is up against. Boyd should have done better but then he didn't get a lot of service and when he did get chances they just didn't fall for him nicely enough. Perhaps he needs to work on his adaptability as I'm sure he could have improvised and done something out of the ordinary.

Finally, the atmosphere was somewhat muted and perhaps now the fans, on both sides are beginning to see the folly in bigoted chanting, while yesterday there were some songs sung that might be deemed sectarian the add on lines were cut out so its a small step but there is still a long way to go to eradicate this cancer.

So 0-0 isn't the worst result and if I had been asked on Friday if I would take a Hibs win and a 0-0 I would have said yes to that so the chase is still on, it just looks like the final game is going to be the one that decides our and Hearts' fate.

Part One - April 23/2006

Part one:

So todays the day then and with 8 hours until kick off its a question now of who is going to be in the team and how McLeish should set his stall out. I think he should start with an up at em approach keeping the long hopeful punts up the park to a minimum. By going for the jugular from the word go that should hopefully unsettle Celtic and put them on the back foot. If a one or to goal lead can be attained early then Rangers should just sit back and hit them on the break using Burkes pace, Prso's skill and brawn and Boyds poaching instincts. However if I think thats all we have to do then I would be mistaken. Petrov will be well up for this one as he wants to put himself in the shop window whether Celtic want him to leave or not. I would give the job of shackling him to Bob Malcolm as the two centre backs will have a lot to contend to as it is with Hartson and Zurawski. Burke as well has a lot to do with not only looking to net down the line and being a creative influence but will also have Maloney out there to keep an eye on. If he can get the service into Boyd then I am sure he can put some of the chances away but we have to be more inventive to create chances. In previous old firm games Rangers have had precious few shots let alone shots on goal and that must improve and Boyd will endear himself to the fans even more if he sticks a goal or two away as long we keep them out at the other end. Soti must keep his cool and cut out the stupid stuff . As he is out of contract in the summer he is another who will no doubt be looking for a new employer this summer and a good performance will help his chances of getting a decent club. J Rod I have faith in him he will do asterling job for us and so will Stevie Smith. Alan Hutton must show the strength of character to bounce back from last weeks nightmare performance, If he comes through this game and has had a good game he will prove that he has the character required to be a Rangers player and will enhance his reputation. Wattereus has been in good form too lately lets hope it continues.

Enjoy the game and part two of todays blog will appear later.

Old Frim - April 22/2006

Todays result at Easter Road has really put the cat among the pigeons now and under the new caretaker manager Tynecastle their top players such as Webster and Skacel are being left out of the side and losing at the home of their biggest rivals, one has to wonder whether they will hold their nerve or bottle it and the last game of the season is looking increasingly important. The atmosphere amongst the Hearts squad must surely be strange and with more than just a couple of disgruntled players and it is up to Rangers to do what we can to catch them, starting tomorrow. There is no use on the team relying on other results as all the other teams have something to play for and will be out to claim a UEFA cup place for themselves and will have no interest whatsoever in helping Rangers achieve second place. So in short Hibs have done some of the work for us this time, but we must do the job not just tomorrow at the Girodome but for all the upcoming games.

The SFA Chief Executive has said in an interview with The Herald that UEFA should not make any hasty decisions in terms of punishments for "Discriminatory chanting". What he is saying is that they will not take measures just to be seen to be doing something about it and that any knee jerk reaction may actually exacerbate the situation instead of resolving it. He also says that the problem is more than just Rangers faulkt and that it is part of a wider problem in society as a whole, and he is dead right about that as in Scotland there are many rivalries between Cities, regions, suburbs etc and while a friendly rivalry is great there is no need for the hatred and mistrust that there is whether its Rangers and Celtic, Glasgow and Edinburgh or Aberdeen and erm, everywhere else. The problem is not just with Rangers but if Rangers have to take measures then surely the government should as well.

Back to football now and McLeish is banking on Kris Boyd to break his duck against Celtic.

"We bought Kris Boyd in January and we've had a great return," he said.

"Hopefully we can add to Boydy's tally. He has come here and hit the ground running. What more can you ask from him?

"He has scored plenty of goals even though we know how long it takes sometimes for players to settle into a club like Rangers."

"We've lost Dado Prso, Nacho Novo and Thomas Buffel at times for long periods but we've not really had as many goals spread across the team as we normally would have, certainly in our championship-winning years.

"Boydy has scored plenty since he came from Kilmarnock and it would be nice to think we could get a bit of inspiration from guys like Dado and Thomas and even Chris Burke."

I have full faith that Boyd will do the business tomorrow he has done very well since joining Rangers and with any luck he will get the right sort of service that will hopefully mean he gets a goal or two. One worry is that we will have 4 players out 3 of whom are senior players but this is a chance for others to step up and show what they can do. I would make big Dado the captain should Fergie not make it nor would I play Fergie if he is less than 80% fit as there is too much at stake for him and the club. When he was handed the captains armband when Ferguson went off during the win at Dundee Utd you could see how much it meant to Prso and he is the ideal choice to be captain due to his work ethic, commitment and all round play added to the fact that he loves the club and is happy at Ibrox.

On that note I'll leave it there so enjoy the game its a 5.30am kick off here and I have work at 8 so its going to be a long day tomorrow lets hope a Rangers win makes it bearable.

Old Frim - April 21/2006

And its the end of the week thank god and the anticipation is mounting for Sundays game. There is still no word on whether Fergie will play but Lovenkrands, Namouchi and Ricksen are all out for defenite. I've been thinking how Rangers should approach this game and what system to use and I think that Rangers should go for the frustrating tactics that worked so well against Porto and while its not something I would normally advocate it is a necessity for Rangers to be defensive for at least two thirds of the game. However in saying that the plans can go right out of the window during an old firm games which is one of the things that make it the worlds most intense derby match.

So without further ado here is the line up I would go with.

Wattereus

Hutton Soti J Rod Andrews Smith

Hemdani

Burke Prso

G Rae

Boyd

Subs-Klos, Murray, Malcolm, A Rae, Novo, Buffel, N'Guessan

A controversial choice in defence I know having 5 at the back but one option would be to put Buffel on at some point for one of the centre backs to provide more of a link between midfield and attack than Gavin Rae can offer it also means that he will have more of an opportunity to make the kind of box to box runs that are one of his hallmarks.

The defence being so packed willo surely frustrate Celtic and with the news that Petrov wants away it may just be playing on their players minds and who knows maybe we can sneak a result there. Its about bloody time we did.

So more on the game tomorrow, have a good Friday night.

No Fergie? - April 20/2006

Barry Ferguson looks like he is going to miss the big game this weekend due to injury and I would think that his season is now over. Thankfully we have adequate replacements and I am referring to Gavin Rae who will be raring to go and make a positive contribution after his injury hell.

Chris Burke has joined the "UEFA cup is not so bad after all" brigade and I hope that this is not what the players are going to settle for. They should do the talking on the pitch and keep fighting for 2nd. 3rd place is not good enough with the squad and resources that Rangers have we should have won the league but then I am happy with the progress we made in Europe and am prepared to have a not so good domestic season as long as we have a sustained European run whether its in the CL or UEFA cup.

Finally, Calgary is in with a great shout for the North American Rangers Supporters Association convention in 2008. The Calgary tourist board are going to help and do a presentation on why it should be held here so heres hoping.

til tomorrow.

What If? - April 19/2006

Its the old "What if?" question that springs to mind as Arsenal prepare to take on Rangers conquerers Villareal tonight. As we all know they were lucky to get past Rangers let alone Inter and if only it was us still in there plugging away. But it ain't.

Speaking of Europe Thomas Buffel has said that it would not be all bad news if we didn't make it into the Champions League next season. He is right to an extent as we can take inspiration from the two Bucharest clubs that have done so well as well as the likes of Middlesbrough who have reached the latter stages, but come on who would he rather be playing potentially? Someone like Gornik Zabarze or the Ac Milan's and Man Utd's. His words are sounding like he is raising the white flag of surrender and what we want to hear him saying is " We will fight till the last, nothing less than Champions League qualification will do and the squad will do whatever it takes to achieve that goal."

McLeish and Stevie Smith have come and said they are determined that Rangers will win the final Old firm of the season and indeed McLeish's reign and Gordon Strachan has paid Rangers the compliment of saying that he will field his strongest side. It is going to be a tough one but McLeish should have a surprise up his sleeve as he has on old firm games previously.

Lets hope he has.

UEFA APPEAL - April 18/2006

UEFA today have received an appeal on their decision last week to exonerate their charges against Rangers last week. Gerhard Kapl, who compiled the evidence for the governing body, has challenged last week's ruling and the appeal is expected to be heard before the end of the season. I think that a lot of fans got carried away last week, particularly among our less savoury "Supporters" whose idea of cheering on a team is to shout sectarian slogans and now we are back to square one on this issue, wondering what is going to happen to us. One thing, however, is that UEFA are not big on appeals and it may get thrown out but at the same time I ould not be surprised if UEFA did overturn their ruling and give us a stiffer punishment than $20000 for one fan smashing a window. Incidentally have UEFA decided what to do with Villareal after their ticket fiasco and the fact that all fans were shepherded down a narrow street before and after our game there? I have yet to hear anything about this and would love to know how they are being punished, if at all.

And more on the chanting front and there are reports that Rangers are going to be cited by the SPL for sectarian chanting on Saturday. Apart from the Sash and The cry was no surrender neither of which, I have been reliably informed, have lyrics that call for the slaughter of Catholics or have bigoted lyrics. I watched the game live and actually commented at half time to a couple of guys at the RSC here that I hadn't heard any offensive chanting. In fact what I did find offensive was Aberdeen fans singing about Neil Simpsons "tackle" or more accurately assault on Ian Durrant and from what I heard their usual Ibrox disaster ditty was sung too.

And finally young Brian McLean is looking to make his move to Motherwell permanent and good luck to him its a shame it didn't work out but at least he will be working under a fine manager in Terry Butcher.

T'ra then.

A Slow Day - April 17/2006

And its Monday and not much happening on Planet Rangers nor in Planet Calgaryloyal and as its Easter Monday I am taking aday off from doing this. Back in style tomorrow.

*   *  *  *  *

Happy Easter - April 16/2006

And a happy Easter to y'all my Easter message to you is going to be different from my usual daily words of wisdom on a Sunday as I may actually talk sense for once. And in the absence of any news worth talking about I am going to discuss McLeish's legacy to Rangers.

Financial:

With the lack of signings he made involving transfer fees he has saved the club an absolute fortune and with this seasons CL revenue it surely means a few more mil for PLG on top of the JJB deal and the season ticket revenue. Ok I realise that it wasn't a case of McLeish going up to Murray and Bain saying " Don't give me money, its all cool I want to bring in the likes of Ostenstad." But if he had been more firm with the club he may have had to leave earlier and leaving us in a situation with no manager and maybe if that had happened we may have been left with a worse manager and we wouldn't have the resources to bring in PLG.

Personnel:
Some good youngsters have emerged at Ibrox since he took over but while I feel that some of the guys that are gone now, whether on loan or permanent should have been given more of a chance and I am referring to the likes of Fetai, McLean, Adam and McCormack here. Arsene Wenger recently said about playing youngsters that it is best to play them sooner than later as you may lose them later. In that he means they may not have their confidence and that can be detrimental to a lot of players as thyey will feel that no matter what they do they will get binned after a couple of games. Sound familiar? And as for the more senior players well we have an ok group but they should have gelled and with rumours abound of a players revolt with Ricksen seemingly at the centre of it(allegedly) It does not bode well but at least PLG will be aware of all these factors and will no doubt take them into due consideration. So there is a good nucleus there all that needs to be done is get them playing good football and also winning and winning in style. Who knows maybe some of the players that have disapointed will find a new lease of life under PLG. To get a comparitive example we need only to look at Petrov- rubbish under Barnes but immense under O'Neil.

Fans:

Due to the fact that a number of bears were never happy with him joining us in the first place and have looked for excuses to get him out there is an almost unanimous feeling of relief that PLG is coming. I think that the time is right for Eck to go as he has achieved a lot with the club albeit with a few disapointments along the way. Viktoria Zizkow is a prime example but then Walter Smith had some embaressing exits to endure as well during his tenure. But the fans stuck by the team all the ay and will continue to do so.

So to sum up then McLeish has left a good legacy and we should be thankful he stuck by the club when he could have left citing financial constraints. He was not the best manger we have ever had but at least he has acted with the best interests of the club in mind and has kept his dignity when he didn't have to considering the manouvering the club did in the run up to the Le Guen appointment.

Well thats all only a week till the OF game heres hoping.

Woeful! - April 15/2006

Inept, woeful, unimaginative, lacksadaisical and thats just a few adjectives on how Rangers played today. The only players who deserved pass marks were Wattereus, Rodriguez and Prso. The rest of them did precious little and had a tendency to drift out of the game especially Burke and Buffel. This was Burke's first game back from injury so he can be forgiven for looking rusty there were one or two times when he beat his man and got in a decent cross but on the whole there was little end product from him and as for Hutton well he had an absolute stinker and should have gone off sooner his fellow full back Smith fared a little better but he really needs to work on his crossing as some of his crosses are either overhit or too soft and thats not just in todays game but in almost every game in which I have seen him play in. But even still I'd have him in the team ahead of Ian Murray and Bernard. Hemdani did little and it was no surprise to see him come off and perhaps its time to bring in Bob Malcolm again to fill the sitting midfielder role. He did nothing to deserve getting dropped and has done well this season when given the chance and with Ferguson still toiling and in dire need of his operation I'd give Gavin Rae a run in the team a sit is clear now that 2nd place is almost impossible given Hearts 5 point lead.

I must though give credit where its due and Wattereus made a couple of great saves and kept us in it and the reception he got from the fans was good too as were the lack of FTP chants.

So I'll leave it there and I'll be back tomorrow.

*   *  *  *  *

Good Friday then and its tomorrow that we play Aberdeen and usually on a Friday I predict the line and speculate on what tactics would be the best to use. Due to me getting my days mixed up that stuff is on yesterdays blog so check it out if you haven't already.

According to the Herald and the Sun UEFA could appeal there own decision regarding the offensive chants issue but I cannot see that happening as it exactly what you'd expect from the Sun as it is rare for them to publish a positive story about Rangers and if they can think of an anti Rangers story or article they will. Look at the Wattereus situation last week for example they published a story that was wrong and got "Lost in translation" when they could have taken an extra 10 minutes to check the translation and it would have meant that Wattereus would not have been booed. I know I am sounding paranoid here but these are facts and I could go on for hours about anti Rangers stuff in the Sun and the Herald to an extent too but at least the Herald is a decent paper. I would be surprised if UEFA were to appeal their decision as they are not big on appeals and would like Rangers to get on with it and do whatever it takes to stop offensive chanting and as Rangers have been given a real scare on this issue I have faith that the club will deal with it. If only some of the "fans" who act in a bigoted manner realised that they are harming the club they claim to love and did something about it then we will have made progress but we should be very aware that UEFA have their eye on Rangers and Celtic too so we really have to watch ourselves. Mcleish's contribution to this debate was that it could open a can of worms if clubs were deducted points for offensive chanting.

"There are other countries with problems - where does it start and where does it end? But we have to look after our own domestic scene and maybe set an example."

He is right too, his second sentence is basically saying "Lets put our own house in order and set an example and if others follow then good, if not well tough.

On a brighter note congratulations to big Marv for making into the provisional T&T World Cup squad. Good luck to him and indeed all other Rangers players who may make it into their countries world cup squads.

So folks enjoy the game tomorrow whether at Ibrox, on the radio or at Your supporters club abroad.

Gers v. Aberdeen April 13/2006

So its the first post split game for Rangers against another of our major foes, Aberdeen and I can see this being a very tight game and Rangers will have a hell of a lot to do to get 3 points tomorrow as Aberdeen are in a good run of form at the moment and they are an outside bet of getting 4th spot and therefore a UEFA cup berth should Hearts win the Scottish Cup and finish 3rd. Added to that the hostilities between the clubs and the fact that Aberdeen only ever play to their full potential when playing Rangers and it is clear that it will be a tight, nervy, niggly and close game. Rangers I can see winning this 2-0 but we must get an early goal so that Aberdeen are forced to attack more and the we can hit them on the break and maybe get a few more. The counter attacking style suits Rangers and should work tomorrow. So without further ado here is my prediction for the line up:

Mullet

Hutton Soti J Rod Smith

Burke Ferguson Hemdani

Buffel

Boyd Prso

subs: Klos, Andrews, Rae, Murray, Novo, Namouchi, N Guessan

Buffel has not been on form these past few games and with the way Aberdeen play his presence will be limited as he will always have someone sticking tight to him, and in any case with the ammunition being supplied in abundance from the wings we should be ok but a good plan B would be to take Ferguson off if if he is toiling and go with gavin rae and pulling prso back out wide leaving boyd on his own with buffel supporting him.

So I for one cannot wait to see this tomorrow even though I will have to be up early to see it as its an 8am kick off here so heres hoping for a fine win.

UEFA Judgement - April 12/2006

So UEFA today cleared Rangers of any wrongdoing regarding bigoted chanting but we were lucky to get away with this. William Gaillard, head of communications with European football's governing body, said: "We had individual reports of such chanting.

"But, having looked at the evidence, Rangers fans were found not guilty of racist or discriminatory chanting.

"Uefa might have a more elaborate explanation when they reveal explanations on both counts on Thursday."

I for one cannot wait to find out and am mightily relieved that no action is going to be taken. Many fans myself included were worried that they would make an example of us but UEFA have shown strength and common sense and hats off to them for that.

David Murray recognises that this is not the end of it and this statement he says:
"We were confident throughout that the tremendous efforts made by the club to tackle sectarianism, racism and all other forms fo inappropriate behaviour over a protracted period would be recognised and acknowledged by Uefa," he said.

"Few clubs in Europe can match the sustained effort we've made in this respect over the past five years and even less would have been able within the tight deadlines imposed by Uefa to produce such comprehensive material to support this.

"We are grateful too for the many testimonials and expressions of support received from a wide range of individuals and organisations.

"None of this, however, should mask the face that sectarianism remains a very serious problem within Scottish society and it now has to stop.

"Nothing in our submission to Uefa denied this fact.

"A minority of our supporters are going to have to realise, and realise very quickly, that the controlling authorities in football, whether Fifa, Uefa, the SFA, the SPL or SFL, are going to be obliged almost immediately to impose the heaviest possible sanctions for discriminatory behaviour.

"It's time for the 90-minute bigots to remain silent, for others to speak out, exerting a peer pressure on those that disgrace their clubs and for the promotion of decent football songs and chants, of which there are many."

And he is dead right while we are going to make a hell of a lot of progress on the pitch and training with PLG the club and fans must make progress in the stands and if we lose a few season ticket holders over then so be it, I bet there are loads of people who would like to go to Ibrox more often but don't because they find some of the chanting offensive.

And on that note I'll leave it there 4 hours sleep last night due to a shift swap and I need to get back and do some work now.

*   *  *  *  *

24 Hours - April 11/2006

24 hours to go until the report and consequences of UEFA's investigation into Rangers is revealed. Peter McCloy the goalkeeping legend is like the vast majority of us wishing for a sensible outcome to proceedings. William Gailard UEFA's director of communications is saying that they are not specifically targetting the Old Firm but looking at the issue throughout Europe (Unless it seems you play in a lucrative league). The best we can hope for is a fine but if we get all or part of the ground closed for European matches then the matchgoers whose chanting and singing could be described as bigoted must stop it. While the fans make the atmosphere what it is at Ibrox particularly on European nights there is the added resposibility to ensure that these nights continue and that the clubs reputation is not tarnished in any ay. e ould be the laughing stock of European football if on a Champions League night there are no fans because of offensive singing. The club must come first, not the political or religious beliefs of a few.

And onto on the pitch matters now and Kris Boyd is being tipped by last years winner of the Players Young player of the year award, Derek Riordan. And quite right too. He has banged in 31 goals this season and is quite possible the most deadly striker to play for Rangers since Ally McCoist. There are other contenders too, such as Chris Burke and across the city with Shaun Maloney. But for me Boyd has to be the winner based on his goals and if he wins it will be well deserved. Dado Prso's support for him too saying that he is well good enough for Rangers reiterates my belief in him as when a top player like Dado endorses you then you are doing something right. Now while we want to see more goals from Prso and Boyd in the run in, the priority must be to win all the games and it should not matter who scores as long as we score loads and keep the defence as stingy as an unemployed Aberdonian.

And speaking of the defence it looks like Le Guen is saying 'non' to Fanfan and we could be looking at a pay off just to get rid of him as we did with Dragan "the dud" Mladenovic. What has been going on with him as McLeish must have known that he is not a right back and in playing him out of position and then banishing him when it doesn't work out there he has once again cost the club a lot of money that could have gone to better use. Fanfan is on about 17k per week which in his 8 months or so has cost the club around 600k and just think what we could've done with that sort of money.

So til tomorrow and the outcome from UEFA then.

Zurab Sold - April 10/2006

And its a fond farewell to Zurab whose gone to Balckburn for an undisclosed fee and good luck to him I say. The way he was treated by McLeish was a bit of a disgrace especially as it seemed he was pilloried for his inept displays in Europe last season when, if my memory serves me right, he was played out of position. While I think at times last season he put in a good shift for Rangers there were times he didn't and he also looked like someone who was a wee bit overawed at playing for such a big club and in front of 50000 fans. It was at times akin to watching a rabbit in headlights. So good luck then Zurab and I hope it works out for you.

Peter Lovenkrands may be out for the rest of the season and therefore Saturdays game may have been his last for the club. I would love it if he sayed as he is a big game player and has scored some very important goals for us but his lack of consistency is so frustrating as his propensity to hide during games. His wage demands though are one of the stumbling blocks and I find it hard to fathom that he wants his basic wage to go up when he not only earns a substantial sum each week but at times does little to justify his wage being as high as it is. As I have said before I would offer a lower basic but with high bonuses based on performances. That kind of deal would be a major incentive for most players and the chances are if he did well and got goals when and where it matters then the chances are he'd earn more than he does now.
Finally Roman Bednar of Hearts has stuck his head above the parapets of Tynecastle to proclaim that Rangers have no chance of catching Hearts. Yeah, whatever mate 3 points ahead and you think you can't be caught? Get a grip! The chase is on and by winning games as we did on Saturday and as McLeish would have said last season, winning ugly then we are hot on their heels. The question is: Who will blink first?

Le Guen the Answer - April 9/2006

Rangers director Alistair Johnston has said that Le Guen could well be the man to take us to the Champions League final: "We weren't beaten by Villarreal in the last 16, only losing on away goals, and they are in the semi-finals already.

"To be eliminated without being defeated by a team of their calibre shows we are not far away."

And he is dead right to be saying that but as for our chances, well never say never. I mean look some of the recent finalists Porto, Monaco and Bayer Leverkusen for example, clubs with a limited fan base and smaller attendes than us. There is potential in Rangers to get to a final and emulate some of the other victors achievments in winning the greatest club tournament on the planet or at least getting there.
The split has thrown up an intruiging opening two fixtures against our two biggest enemies Aberdeen at home followed by Celtic away and what a way to start the split off it is with Hearts playing Kilmarnock at home first followed by Hibs away too it is imperative to get off to a good start, stating the bleedin' obvious there I know but if we can get 6 points out of those games, which is going to be a tall order, as we have to go to Tim Towers and that is not the easiest venue to go to and while we will be lucky to get anything out of that game, then that will set up us nicely for 2nd spot. What I do hope is that its a cracker and I'm sure the boys will be well and truly fired up for it as it is Alex McLeish's last old firm game and that in itself is a massive motivating factor added to obviously the chase for 2nd which we could get that day should Hibs beat Hearts at Easter Road. It is going to be a battle of nerve and bottle and I wonder how many of the Rangers guys have enough bottle for. I for one have my doubts as to whether the likes of Hemdani and Buffel have the stomach for this. Hopefully they will and perhaps I may be out of order in saying that but its going to be a nerve shredding 6 weeks or so for us either way unless Hearts really do fall apart in style but that is something not be taken for granted and we simply cannot allow events to take place that takes our destiny out of our own hands.

And on to the daily speculation on who may or may not be Rangers this summer and today its the Senegalese right back Omar Daf who plays for the French side Sochaux, and Jeremy Clement who is currently out of favour at Lyon. Now I have never seen these players or if I have I don't remember. What worries me about all this press speculation other than raising fans hopes in most cases wrongly is the effect its going to have on players they will be replacing and I am referring to the young guys who have played so well this season and what its going to do to their confidence. I am sure that their attitude is just to get on with and do their best and rightly so but we all know that Rangers are a club who are always being linked with this player and that player and they shouldn't read into things too much. But it will be harsh on them if they're ditched as they have done so well and are home grown products one of the things that Murray Park was built for and it would be a massive failure if Rangers did not take full advantage of a world class facility that is ours.

A Busy Day on the Rangers Front - April 8/2006

A busy day on the Rangers front then and plenty to talk about, first of all it sounds like it was a laboured victory for Rangers today but 3 points is 3 points and the pressure must be kept on Hearts. As we didn't get the game beamed over to us here in Canada I cannot comment on how well the team played and who did well and who didn't unfortunately but I think the line up was spot on other than the Mullet being in the team after what he has said in the past few days. Speaking of which I am not reading too much into it as it has come out in the sun which is hardly a reliable source of information and also the most anti Rangers paper there is. Any paper that gives a platform to the likes of Bill Leckie, Rikki Brown and Richard Littlejohn is not to be taken seriously at all. I am not surprised that he was booed today though but I think he let his goalkeeping do the talking today by all accounts so fair play to the guy but maybe Klos should come back in if Wattereus carries on speaking out like he supposedly has.
Onto the Scweinsteiger story and this was one that was unexpected as from what I have seen of him he is really good and defenitely one of Europes hottest properties if we get him it will be a major coup and as he has been rated at 5mil it will be a bargain. Yes he is that good.
Enough from me then enjoy your Saturday night and keep believing.

A Win This Week - April 7/2006

Apologies for the lack of blog yesterday, computer problems were the cause but moving on now the weekend is upon us and its Motherwell who are next in the firing line and there are no major injury problems apart from Barry Ferguson who I cannot see playing the whole match. The team pretty much picks itself after last Sundays performance and while Motherwell are a difficult proposition at Fir Park, more often than not they are not usually much of a problem at Ibrox and so therefore I can see us winning fairly easily (Well I won't be seeing it as its not being beamed over here). I think that Rangers should go with the same team and line up from last Sunday as it sure as hell worked with some style. Hearts are now only 3 points ahead but with them playing Dunfermline at Tynecastle 2nd place will not be possible as they have a goal difference of +33 compared to +24 for the Gers. However give it a few weeks and we will be there.

McLeish's dignity in the wake of C*****'s title victory is refreshing and it goes to show that you can lose gracefully and not resort to petty comments and accusations. It sure hurts that we have not mounted a serious enough challenge to a team that is really not that great, hoever next season we will be back and back in style and the teams in the SPL and whoever we get in Europe had better watch out as we will be keen to make ammends and under the guidance of Le Guen we may just become a team to be feared again.

Finally Pistol Pete has been to scope Osasuna out and if he goes there he will be joining a team with a good chance of reaching the Champions League and that is the type of club he should be joining should he depart this summer and not a struggling English Premiership club like Birmingham.

If your going to the game, enjoy if not have a good weekend anyway. Mon the Gers!

Best Wishes King Kai - April 5/2006

First of all its a best wishes message to Kai Johansen the 60's legend who scored the winner in the 1966 cup final and starred in the team that reached the 1967 Cup winners cup final in Nurenburg against Bayern Munich. He was one of a number of Danish imports in the 1960's that Morton of all clubs signed and he quickly became a fans favourite at Ibrox. How good it would have been playing in the same side as Greig, Baxter, Henderson and co. Reports on his condition vary one says he has terminal cancer and another syas he will get better after an operation but either way he deserves our best wishes.

So onto Barry Ferguson now and what is he all about? He needs this operation and by playing on he will be doing his career no good as it will catch up with him sooner or later. Maybe he wants to be like Paul McStay who had to retire at 32 through injury or doesn't want to be able to walk properly when he is older or at the very least wants to have more aches and pains than is necessary. Still thats up to him, by doing this he will miss the start of the season and 2 likely Champions League qualifying rounds and perhaps when he returns after Le Guen has signed a few players he may find it hard to get back in the team. If though he is used sparingly like he as on Sunday and maybe only playes half or two thirds of a game then it might be ok but if his performances are not up to scratch then McLeish should tell him to go get his operation without delay.

Peter Lovenkrands has held talks with a La Liga club about a possible move there and while it is unclear who it is he should be looking for a club who are going to be in Europe next season. Portsmouth and Birmingham City are said to be interested too and he went to either of those teams he will be ,making a backwards step in his career. Ok he would be playing Premiership football but thats all. Rangers are a difficult club to leave and he must weigh up chasing the big bucks and the big leagues against regular European football and the chance to play under one of world footballs best up and coming coaches. As the voiceover guy on Blind Date would say "Peter, the decision is yours!"

And on that note, I'll leave it there. Oh yeah and good luck to Arsenal tonight too.

"...We will do it." - April 4/2006

"Don't forget that we play for Rangers. We will do it."

Says Dado Prso and that is exactly the attitude that should be throughout the squad right now. The keep believing mantra that was personified by Marvin Andrews last year is back and I have no doubt in my mind that we will get 2nd place as there is a real desire throughout the team to achieve it. Maybe the bad form earlier in the season was down to the Champions League and also the injury situation but the fact remains that we are still in the hunt for 2nd place. With all the flak that Alex McLeish has taken throughout his tenure as Rangers manager the thing that has summed up his time at Ibrox is perseverance, resilience and sheer doggedness as has been shown on the last day of season championship wins and this season in the champions league especially against Porto away and the fightback at Ibrox against Villareal. If we get to 2nd place comfortably then McLeish can walk away knowing that he achieved what many though impossible 5 months ago and the fans who have called for his head time and time again should hold their hands up and admit that he wasn't so bad after all and be grateful for what he achieved with little money to spend and the downsizing of the quality of players at the club.

Other news today is that Rangers have made "Initial Submissions" to UEFA in regards to the disciplinary hearing that is going to take place next Tuesday in Nyon, Switzerland. I think Rangers have been undertaking work to solve the bigotry problem but it is not going to happen over night as the cliche goes "Rome wasn't built in a day" so while there is still work to be done. I hope as well that if UEFA take major action against Rangers they will be equally harsh against certain teams around Europe where there have been problems with hooliganism. Take Middlesbrough for example the other week. When they went 2 goals down in Basel the fans started fighting with Basel fans and I have yet to hear any condemnation from UEFA over this and as for the Turks well they've been attacking team buses for years and nothing ever seems to be done about it. Lets see some consistency please UEFA or you will show yourselves for what many think you are. A dim witted bunch whose only concern is making money and having power and making sure that the richest teams get richer and not having the balls to take on a club from a lucrative country.

Thats all from me today.

Wednesday... - April 3/2006

And now the attention turns to Parkhead on Wednesday as Celtic face Hearts in what will be their chance to win the title. As much as I find this galling I am thinking that a Celtic victory would do us just fine only in that it enhances our chances of finishing 2nd and getting the all important Champions League qualifying berth. Ideally I want a really bad, dirty game with a couple of sendings off in each team and followed by a riot in the stands that will lead to both teams getting points deducted and their stadiums closed for a few games plus the obligitory big fine. Yes we can dream but the players also have to realise that the damage was done between September and November and also February when we lost form. Sadly though, the way we have played these past few weeks has shown that when we do play we play some good football. Albeit that was hindered yesterday by a horrendous pitch at Tannadice the fact that we had the "Show must go on" mentality as a positive sign and as McLeish is saying today we can show no mercy to the rest of the teams we play this season. So lets hope for sweet revenge against certain teams.

Thats all for today.

Gers Pound Dundee Utd. - April 2/2006

Well that was alright eh? It was a good team performance and while the game took a while to settle down it was good to see that we can cope without key personnel and while I have been a bit critical of Boyd he has well and truly shut me up! His hat trick was sensational and its always good to see a striker scoring a hat trick and doing it with relative ease. You could see that after the first goal there was a real hunger there to get more goals and was always chasing more and what really surprised me was that he smiled too!

Wattereus fully vindicated McLeish's decision to put him back in with a string of fine saves and while I though he could have done better with the goal Utd scored he wasn't given enough help from the 2 centre backs but the flip side is that Collin Samuel is a very pacy player and that can be a nightmare for defences. The btwo full backs once again were on good form a couple of bad crosses were the only blemish today but I think we can live with that.

I wasn't surprised to see Fergie leave the pitch early as he was not looking comfortable and judging by the way he left the pitch it is safe to say that this was his last appearance for Rangers under McLeish. Hopefully the operation he is going to have will be a success and the sooner he is back on the park for Rangers the better. Hemdani showed some nice touches too and he is really starting to settle into the team now and I feel he will be an integral part of the team next season. I was surprised to see Lovenkrands on the righ and Prso on the left and while Prso had a good game, Lovenkrands didn't. Far too many times he tried to go past players and ran into them and got nowhere and admittedly his role in Boyds first goal was good but other than that he didn't really do a lot to impress and I wonder if he will be a Rangers player next season. Prso on the other hand was a real threat he held the ball up well, worked his socks off and his goal was an absolout peach and his persistence in setting up Boyds second which was a tremendous ball across the face of goal was pleasing too as it was exactly the right kind of ball to play, low and hard.

Buffel though he did ok was guilty of unnecesarily holding the ball up and that wasted at least one potential clear cut chance.
So there we go then only 3 points behind Hearts now and while they have a game in hand it sure puts pressure on them now and I am hoping for a nil nil draw on Wednesday with a couple of sendings off from both teams.

Til tomorrow then.

An Exciting Weekend - April 1/2006

With the all Edinburgh Scottish cup semi final being played tomorrow, it is a tremendous opportunity for Rangers to close the gap to 3 points especially as Hearts' game in hand is against celtic. The pressure is undoubtably on Hearts to keep 2nd spot and with Mad Vlad's antics anything they achieve will be in spite of him as well as because of him.

Enough about Hearts and as for tomorrows game, well it will be tough as Tannadice is not always a happy hunting ground for Rangers, and over the past 2 seasons they have become something of a bogey team for us. But the way that Rangers have been playing and the determination that has been shown in the team of late will surely lead to a win maybe not by much but at least it will be a win but hopefully a good win and performance to end Barry Fergusons season in style. If as expected he goes under the knife this coming week this will be his last game for probably 4 months minimum and while he will be missed it will benefit him and the team in the long run to get it over and done with now. We have ample cover in midfield so we should manage but it is up to the senior players to stand up and be counted and show the leadership on the park that we need. Say what you like about Ferguson and his methods of on field leadership but he is good at pushing the players in the team and squeezing an extra 20% out of them.

As for injuries well we still have Fan Fan and Namouchi out. Nuff said. But the big question is over who will play in goal and I think that the Mullet will probably return despite Klos's good performance last weekend. Other than that I don't foresee any other changes in the line up but if I was Eck I would be tempted to change things in attack and this is how I think the team will be tomorrow:

Mullet

Hutton Soti J Rod Smith

Burke Ferguson Buffel

Buffel

Prso Lovenkrands

Subs:Klos, Andrews, Ricksen, Murray, N'Guessan, Novo, Boyd

While Boyd has done well since joining the Gers he for me does not offer enough and that is why I would have him on the bench and then bring him on after maybe an hour. His finishing is good but its his all round game that he needs to work on like his link up play for example and he gives away too many free kicks as a result of him having his arms all over the place. Lovenkrands when he came off the bench last week as one player who had a bit of spark about him and had some creative nous and it was a great delivery to set up the goal, so for that he should be in the starting 11 tomorrow.

What could be worrying is that Dundee Utd could do what Dunfermline did last week and pack their penalty box. I do not think that that would be Craig Brewsters style and I think that they will come at us early and try to catch us out as so many teams have done this season to us. Hopefully the players will be alert right from the whistle and maybe it will be us that gets the early goal and then plenty more.

Enjoy the game and have a good Saturday.

Cloggers - March 31/2006

And its the end of another week and the sart of a new weekend of football action and apart from the Rangers game on Sunday its an exciting weekend in the Scottish Cup as well with the Edinburgh derby and the Gretna Dundee game.

Jan Wouters has come out today criticising the "Cloggers" in the Scottish game and to an extent he is right. The amount of fouling that goes on in the Scottish game is terrible and does not make for nice football which any true football fan will want to see. Dado Prso is one player who gets fouled a lot and what bugs me is that when he commits a foul he gets booked so there are double standards there.

Right sorry folks thats yer lot until tomorrow when i will do a preview of Sundays game have a good Friday.

Ferguson To Have Surgery - March 30/2006

And a very happy Thursday to one and all, and why is it a happy Thursday? I hear you cry, well its payday for me the once a fortnight event is here gain today so thats good news anyway.

Other news of note today is that Barry Ferguson is likely to be going under the knife in the next couple of weeks to have as he put it "ankle reconstruction" about time too but it has to be said he was immense in the 2nd leg of the Villareal game but then was poor on Saturday against Dunfermline. I have said several times in the past month or two that it is better for him to have the surgery sooner rather than later rather than harm his future and the clubs on field prospects and if this is the right time so be it. We have extra cover in central midfield too with Ricksen, the two Raes and Boab so I'm sure we could manage without him, but as for the captaincy role well I would give it to Chris Burke. He to me seems like the type of player who would revel in that role and I believe that it would further enhance his performances and as he has arguably been our best player this season he would have the immediate respect of the rest of the team and the fans.

Dado Prso today has come out and said that he wants to get 2nd place for McLeish as he was the one who brought him to Ibrox and was saddened by the criticism he endured this season. Dado is one player who cannot be faulted too much for his displays this season apart from his volleyball practising against Villareal and what we need is a concerted effort by the players to get 2nd place which is well achievable but there can be no slip ups and we cannot take for granted that Hearts will be in so much turmoil that they will collapse nor can we take 3rd place for granted with the 5 point cushion we have over Killie. Nothing less than victory is what the players attitudes should be and if they don't have that attitude they will be found out and hopefully shipped out of Ibrox too.

Ok folks thats all for now.

Arsenal Wins - March 29/2006

A few things today, first of all well done to Arsenal for last nights result and performance. And looking at tonights champions league games one of which in we could have been involved but hey theres always next season.

One thing thats caught my eye and made me laugh was Jean-Claude Darcheville trying to talk his way to Rangers despite turning us down not so long ago.

"Does the arrival of Paul Le Guen at Rangers make me change my mind? To be honest, yes, Why not Rangers? When you go abroad it is better to know the coach is French and he knows how to use you in the best way."

Now why would we want to sign a player who has scored 4 goals in Ligue 1 this season? He is 30 as well, not the age of player we want to be signing. We are being linked with so many French and French based players I wonder how many are on the priority list and how many are on the back up plan list. Ettiene Didot, a defensive midfielder who plays for Rennes is another who has been linked with us. One thing though, we have Hemdani who plays that role and if we got him who would he replace and if Hemdani then we are entitled to a transfer fee for him or better still a cash plus player deal. Hemdani would be no great loss, bearing in mind his injuries, his indifferent approach and the fact that he really isn't that great a player. I mean who gets excited when he gets the ball? I know i don't.

Grégory Tafforeau the Lille left back has been linked as well and it would be sad to see Stevie Smith bombed out when he has done quite well since breaking into the first team. The French connections are fine but we cannot ignore the young guys coming through. 14 million went into building Murray Park and that kind of investment cannot -and should not- be allowed to go to waste. Tafforeau though i am not too sure of how good he is another reason to watch French football to see potential targets, its just a shame that some French League games are excruciatingly dull and watching paint dry at times is a good alternative.

Other talk the past few days is about the Stadium and the plans for it. I am all for the capacity being increased but I think the club has to make it cheaper for Students and families to go to the games. If they did that and maybe made last minute seats available cheaper then i think the club could easily justify a capacity increase in atmospheric as well as economic terms.

Right thats me have a good day.

A New Week - March 27/2006

And its the start of a new week and Rangers and their fans are beginning to recover from Saturdays excuse of a match. It will be interesting to see how many teams adopt this damage limitation tactic and while it is frustrating to watch sometimes it has to be done. McLeish himself said on Saturday "Well we played like that against Porto didn't we?" and it goes to show that he is man enough not to be hypocritical about this issue. Like most things there is a time and a place for that kind of play and it was used on us on Saturday the same way we used it against Porto back in November. Either way if this trend continues with other teams then it is up to McLeish to adopt his tactics to break down packed defences.

Brahim Hemdani has come out today and said that Le Guen coming to Ibrox is being kept at the back of the players minds while we keep focused on the chase for 2nd place. I am certain that we can hold on to 3rd after Hibs losing to the Caley Jags on Saturday and Kilmarnock will not put any pressure on us. Hibs though have fallen away and I wonder if they have the mentality to get back up there challenging for 3rd at least. Losing O'Connor is a big blow for them and they're also losing Gary Caldwell this summer and no doubt Riordan too sooner rather than later. But to get back to Hemdani yes he is right that must be the focus, Le Guen coming is great news but we know that that is a done deal unlike 2nd place in the league and until 2nd place is secured we cannot rest on our laurels.

A Turgid Game - March 26/2006

Yesterdays game has been described as a turgid game by several sections of the media and that is down to Dunfermline's tactics yesterday. I cannot fault them for playing that way as they like any team do not want to come to Ibrox or any ground and get a thrashing, which would have been on the cards had Rangers had a bit more cutting edge. Plenty of chances were created but it was made hard by a packed penalty box and a fine performance by Bryn Halliwell. Some of the saves he made were sensational and he was Dunfermlines best player by a country mile.
Some of the Rangers players were not on form either yesterday and the culprit in chief for me once again is Barry Ferguson I'm afraid. Where was the snarl we've seen in recent weeks? Not only that but his passing was poor on several occasions and I'm not only talking about his longer passes but some of his short passing was poor even simple 10 yard passes and that to me is unacceptable. If it is down to the injury he is carrying then he should get his ass into surgery and get it over with before he does himself serious long term harm. Burke as well wasn't on form but then he was getting closely marked and perhaps there is too much expectation being placed on him. Boyd was the wrong choice top start with up front based on hindsight, which as we all know is a great thing, when Lovenkrands came on he gave us an added edge and his cross that set up big Soti for his goal-well done big man. When he went over to McLeish during the celebrations I wonder what was said. One guy at the Calgary RSC said "Yeah McLeish was saying instead of getting a cash goal bonus you will be getting a set of plates to smash!" Prso as always worked his socks off and one long range shot that came of the post was unlucky not to go in. Other than those the rest of the team did a quiet, unspectacular but efficient job.

Stefan Klos upon his return to the line up proved that he is still a great goalie and still has it, ok he only had 2 or 3 saves of note to make but then , that is a sign of a great keeper that he can keep his concentration when there are long spells of inactivity and pull off the spectacular when a great shot like the one from Andy Tod at the death. Surely his performance yesterday will mean that he is in the starting 11 until the end of the season and hopefully will stay on in the event of the Nantes goalkeeper Landreau not joining us although word has it that he will be moving to Rangers this summer.

One thing was noticable too was the lack of singing of certain songs from the fans. I'm not sure if this is down to the threat we face from UEFA or the fact that it wasn't the greatest of games which was epitomised by the ammount of empty seats with 5 minutes to go. Either way if there are bigoted lyrics being sung that may lead to sanctions against the club, then they need to stop. I understand that some will see it as their heritage and part of the clubs traditions and see it as their right to vocally express bigoted views but theres a time and a place and the football is not the place to do it, especially when it can cause the club to lose money and respect.

Ok so thats the weeknd almost done hope you had a good one and have a good week.

Gers v. Pars - March 25/2006

So folks apologies for no blog yesterday, unfortunately I wasn't feeling too well but I'm ok now and writing before I go to bed so here goes.
The atmosphere round Ibrox seems to be one of optimism and determination to reach 2nd place and with good reason too as we have been handed a massive opportunity to do it with the shenanigans at Tynecastle these past few days. Hearts can only throw it away now and there is more of a chance of that happening with the upheavel that they are going through now and the sense of insecurity that is surrounding them just now. I think as well that the fact that the caretaker managers lack of English will hinder matters too and I can see them falling away and maybe it will Hibs who sneak 3rd place. Although we have to win all games to guarantee 2nd and maybe get within a semi respactable points gap but it is still a tall order and one that should not be treated as a done deal until it is a done deal mathematically after that it is time that the manager gave more kids their chance get guys like Carcary, N'Guessan, Ashikodi and others their chance . Last Sundays game was a game in which Rangers overcame and stared down a very physical approach from Hearts and that is a sign that is a team in good shape and not willing to hide when things get a bit heavy on the park. Added to that the football being played by Rangers has been good of late and it will be good to see them taking on a team who are on bad form and at the wrong end of the table and I can see Rangers winning this 3 or 4 nil, or even more who knows?

So here is my predicted line up for todays game:

Mullet

Hutton Soti J Rod Smith

Burke Ferguson Hemdani

Buffel

Boyd Prso

Subs:Klos, Andrews, Murray, Ricksen, N'Guessan, Novo, Lovenkrands.

N'Guessan is in the squad and if we are a few goals up I can see him getting his chance and it would be nice if it wasn't just for 2 minutes at the end. I cannot see Dunfermline causing Rangers any major problems and after last weekends CIS cup final defeat they will be hurting and perhaps that will mean that they have an up and at 'em approach and there may be a bit more determination from them but it will count for nothing when Burkey and co get going and for the Gers watching the game at Ibrox and around the world on Setanta and those listening to the radio or on the net it will be an enjoyable game.

Enjoy...........................

Kim Kallstrom - March 23/2006

So the word today is that the Danish international midfielder Kim Kallstrom may be joining Rangers this summer having not seem him play, this is another guy I'll have to keep an eye out for. As he is out of contract too he will not command a fee so thats good news too as now there'll be more money for the club to put towards buying Lionel Messi and Wayne Rooney.(We can hope anyway!)

On to the Hearts situation now and if there any fans out there who are not happy with David Murray then what I suggest is looking at Hearts and what has happened since Romanov took over. OK there has been major investment in the team and they are staying at Tynecastle for the time being but would the fans like to have the soul of the club sold to the detriment of the clubs reputation. Murray at least has never interfered with team selection and has behaved with dignity throughout his tenure and has consistently kept his promises to the club. The Advocaat reign was a bit crazy but then he wasn't the only club owner in Europe who went a bit far but at least the club is still in existence and still in a position to get into Europe and while the past 4 years have been tough financially a new chapter is being opened with the arrival of Le Guen and it could just be one of the clubs most fruitful periods in its history.

Ok - So its Tuesday. - March 21/2006

Ok so its Tuesday the summer still hasn't arrived unless your somewhere in the world where it is summer, Martha Stewart is on TV doing some cookery show and to cap it all last night I fell asleep on the settee after a wee afternoon sesh in the pub taking advantage of $2.50 pints of kokanee. Fun times indeed eh? But on the Rangers front the only news of note is that Bordeaux and Morocco striker Marouane Chamack and Lyons Sidney Govou are coming to Ibrox this summer as Le Guen begins to draw up his blue(nose)print for success admittedly I don't know anything about Chamack but will be keeping an eye on Bordeaux games on FoxSports World to check him outbut I have faith in Le Guens ability to spot a good player and harness the talent properly. Govou as well has been doing a good job at Lyyon but is being kept out of the starting 11 by Fred and John Carew so a move to Ibrox would be mutually advantageous to both parties. Tell you what though this close season is going to be the most interesting for the right reasons in a number of years and while some departures and arrivals may prove to be controversial the fact remains that Rangers are heading in the right direction-onwards and upwards.

Robert Pires? - March 20/2006

Well I've been a lazy so today as its day off for me and I didn't sleep all that well at the weekend like Saturday night I only got 4 hours sleep if I'm lucky so I could watch the game so this is me just up at 1pm but anyhoo, enough about me and on to more pressing matters like what to write about today. Hmmm it is a tough one, but what stands out for me today is the speculation about Robert Pires coming to the club as he wants a longer contract than Arsene Wenger is going to offer as the Arsenal policy is to give its over 30's a one year contract and if he was to come he would get at least a 2 year contract. If that notion had been put to me, say, 2 years ago I would have been all for it but this season 'Le Bob' has not been on form even if he did score at the weekend and fact of the matter is that he's 33 almost 34 and not one for the future and he would probably be earning 25-30 grand a week and while the financial difficulties have been eased somewhat it is sadly I fear going to lead to throwing good money after bad especially when there are better options out there from a football and financial perspective. So who today do I have in mind? I hear you cry and the name is none other than Andy Van der Mayde of Everton who, at the weekend was on the bench at Everton and with his skill, pace and ability to whip in a good cross he could just be the man to solve our left midfield problem as lets face it Ian Murray sure as hell ain't the answer and neither is Olivier Bernard ,in fact Olivier Bernard is the answer to the question "Who is the worst player to wear the famous blue of Rangers this season?" AVDM would not cost too much and is only 26 so therefore the right age to look at as he is just reaching the peak of his powers and as the ultimate cream of Europe are out of our reach, he is the right calibre of player for the club and lets face it we could do a lot worse than him.

Ok so other than this not a whole is happening today so I'll sign off here.

Hearts 1 Rangers 1 - March 19/2006

As I expected it to be, todays game was a tight niggly affair but although I felt that a draw was a fair result even if Buffel should have sealed it in the last 10 minutes. He also should have scored when Burke put a great ball across the face of goal but at least he got us a goal because there was no one else who looked like scoring today but that can also be due to a good defensive performance from Hearts whose spoiling tactics were spot on especially in the first half and give credit to them as they tested Rangers significantly even if the goal they scored once again highlighted the anomaly of the offside rule which FIFA really need to repeal but will they? No as it would make them look stupid as they would have to hold their hands up and say "Sorry we were wrong." and hell will freeze over before the powers that be admit mistakes.

The players though did not function effectively for the majority of the first half and the midfielders had a tendency to drift in and out of the game for example it was 10 minutes into the game before I saw Ferguson get on the ball I missed the first 3 minutes so I didn't see the team line up and assumed he wasn't playing because of injury, Burke as well was another one who did this in the first half but he more than made up for it in the 2nd half. Lovenkrands as well showed why he is probably going to be out at the end of the season. He offered little and while his persistence in the penalty area led to his shot and susequent corner I can't think of any other note worthy contributions from him..possibly as I got less than 4 hours sleep due to the early kick off.

Why as well do we play Ian Murray? He was rubbish as usual and his error led to Hearts goal and he is one guy we could shot of and not a single tear would be shed and it is shocking that Stevie Smith was not in the team either but perhaps it is best not to give guys like him too many games and then things going to pot for the lad if he hits a bad run of form. but while we're on this topic I must add that Novo did nothing to enhance his prospects of a run in the team and it is surely a matter of time before he too is bidding adios to Ibrox I feel for the guy as he can be a smashing player and he seems like good guy as well and it is funny to hear him say "aye" instead of yes when interviewed on tv.

Right I'm away to get some more sleep.

Tomorrow's Team - March 18/2006

So after Hibs slip up today at Motherwell(as predicted here yesterday) Rangers now have a wee bit of breathing space heading into tomorrows game. Unfortunatly we will have to do without Fanfan as he is injured and that will be a major absence so goodness knows how we will manage without him.

The game itself I predict to be a tight affair but I am confident that Rangers will just about edge it and then the pressure is well and truly on Hearts and I can see their bottle crashing in the coming weeks should we get a positive result but before we get carried away the league splits in a few weeks and all the gameswe have when that happens will be tough ones but I feel that the way Rangers are playing just now and finding a wee bit of form at the right time we should do enough to get 2nd place which in November I had given up on.

So here's the team I would pick tomorrow if I was Alex McLeish(Yes thats right I'm not him masquerading as an ex-pat)

Mullet

Hutton Soti J-Rod Smith

Burke Ferguson Ricksen

Buffel

Boyd Prso

subs:Klos,Andrews,Malcolm,Murray,Hemdani,Lovenkrands,Novo

The addition of Ricksen in place of Hemdani is because we need steel in the centre of midfield which is something that Hemdani doesn't offer a lot of but the rest of the team picks itself and we will have enough firepower on the bench should things go awry.
So with the 12.30 kick off which is 5.30am here I will no doubt have to stay up all night so I can watch it at the RSC here but heres hoping it goes the right way.

Enjoy your saturday night and the game tomorrow.

A Big Weekend - March 17/2006

And its the end of another week and its a big weekend for us as we travel to Tynecastle on Sunday, more about that tomorrow but the most intriguing fixture tomorrow has to be Hibs taking on Motherwell at Fir Park and I am tipping Butchers boys to send the Hibees home to think again. Fir Park is a tough venue to go to and I can see (or I am hoping for)a Motherwell victory to give us a wee bit of breathing space in 3rd place and setting us up nicely for Sundays encounter at Tynecastle. So another McDonalds double at Fir Park and we'll be loving it.

Enjoy your weekend.

Back to Business - March 16/2006

So after the Le Guen news its back to business this weekend as the Gers travel to Tynecastle amidst a backdrop of ticket protest climbdowns and Anderlecht declaring an interest in Thomas Buffel.

So the ticket issue is a sore one for the Gers fans who always fill the Gorgie Stand at Tynecastle and with their exorbitant ticket prices for away fans, especially when the old firm come to town the Rangers fans have every right to feel aggrieved by the slashing of the away allocation by around 40%. However the flip side of the coin is that it is Hearts ground and they have the right to slash away fans allocation of tickets whether we like it or not. The fact that Tynecastle is a sell out every week(Just like they sold out when they agreed to sell to Romanov)and there is maybe a wee bit of justification for their decision however galling it is for the fans. The decision not to hold a protest out of respect for the death of Jimmy Johnstone is the right one though and it just goes to show that Rangers fans do have some decorum about them and can act in a respectful manner when other teams legends die as opposed to the likes of Aberdeen and Celtic fans who jeered and disrupted minutes silences for the likes of George "Corky" Young and Jim Baxter to name but two. Sorry if that sounds like cheap point scoring but I am only pointing out facts there and I am sure the Rangers fans will behave in an impeccably dignified and respectful manner on Sunday.

As for Buffel being top of Anderlechts wish list, well we should take it as a compliment that a club with the stature of Anderlecht are looking at our players OK their Belgian and so is Buffel but the words their chairman is using.

"He has 18 months left on his contract and earns 1 million pounds a year"

Sounds like he is trying to get Buffel on the cheap really doesn't it?And my message to Herman Van Holsbeeck is "Don't touch what you can't afford!" I know at times he has been a bit pish but he is a good player especially on the European stage but he is a player we should either be offering a deal to stay on or selling him in the summer and hopefully recouping the fee we paid or bettter still making a profit to add to the transfer kitty for Le Guen this summer. After the Turkish giants Galatasary put in a 4 million pound bid for him last year and his displayes in the champions league we should be looking for that kind of fee for him or maybe even a bigger one.

So on that note I'll leave it there so take it easy and keep keeping it real folks.

Le Guen in Scotland - March 15/2006

Paul Le Guens visit to Scotland yesterday will have no doubt have confirmed to him that he has made the right choice in agreeing to be Rangers next manager. The facilities at Murray Park will have impressed him and it goes without saying that the stadium will have as well. I mean who could not be impressed with those two assets the club has, the fact remains that in European terms Rangers are a sleeping giant, this season has seen a respectable campaign in Europe indeed a damn sight better one than when we had the likes of Laudrup and Gascoigne and getting humiliated by the likes of Strasbourg Ajax and Steau Bucharest. Once Le Guen gets going it will be like a wind up toy being wound up and once it is let off well just sit back and enjoy the ride!
*   *  *  *  *

A Slow Day - March 14/2006

Nothing much going on today then and the only thing going on other than the furore over Le Guen's imminent arrival and the tributes to Jimmy Johnstone is David Murray coming out and warning players that there will be most likely a clear out of players this summer. No surprise there then and lets face it the are some in the first team pool we could easily do without, we know who they are and Paul Le Guen will no doubt be aware of who they are too.

Well as I said not a lot going on and the only other thing thats caught my eye has been the response of Rangers fans to the death of Jimmy Johnstone as it goes to show that not all fans are bigots who are unable to give any praise or respect to rival players and this goes to show that the old firm can be united sometimes like they were when Jim Baxter, Davie Cooper and Jock Stein died.
Ok enough from me til tomorrow then.

A New Era Begins - March 13/2006

So it was a truly monumental weekend in the long proud history of Rangers football club as the club announced the capture of Paul Le Guen on a 3 year contract. and you know what? I'm so excited about this and cannot wait for the season to end so he can get to work and hopefully preparing for another shot at getting into next seasons Champions League. I think the players as well based on the past few performances are beginning to realise that this is a very talented coach who is coming and someone who will make them better players as he has done at every club that he has been coach at and no doubt as well this season on his sabbatical he will have learned some good lessons from Arsene Wenger when he has gone to watch and learn from what he does with the players in terms of coaching styles and man management.

What his first challenge is going to be is deciding who stays and who goes and also who to bring in. There is talk of some of his former players at Lyon coming to Rangers, Patrick Muller for one and Greory Coupe "le goalie" as he will no doubt be known as should he come. These players have a decent pedigree and are players that would enhance most clubs but for the goalkeeping situation we should be looking at a younger guy for the medium to long term or bringing Stefan Klos back into the starting 11 while keeping an eye out for younger talent bearing in mind Klos's age and Wattereus leaving at the end of the season.

As for the rest of the team there are the usual suspects we would like to see leave and some that are out of contract will be allowed to leave but the players in that situation should realise that at times their performances have been unacceptable and if they have any sense of morality should not be looking at holding the club to ransom with big wage increases.

David Murray is to be applauded as well for pulling this off, his persuasive powers have again been triumphant and surely now that will shut up the Murray out brigade and put an end to all doubt about his intentions towards Rangers. Sure it is a gamble but no way will we go down the same road we did with Advocaat but remember that Le Guen was not a major net spender in the transfer market and operated in a shrewd manner so it is safe to say we won't be scraping away at the bargain basement end of the Bosman market again for over the hill b rate players like Vanoli and Ostendsat again but neither will we paying crazy prices for players who were not worth anywhere near what we paid like we did with Kanchelskis, Konterman and Hendry to name but three.

The next few years I predict are going to be a very enjoyable time to be a Rangers fan with the time we will have with Le Guen in charge and then enjoying the fruits of what he will put in place check this link out and you will get my meaning.

On a final note I would like to pay tribute to Jimmy Johnstone who sadly died today. He is a player I wished I had been around to see and looking back at footage of him on BBC world today what he was doing then Ronaldinho todays greatest player is doing now. Jimmy Johnstone-the wee man who became a footballing giant.RIP.

A Fine Win - March 11/2006

A fine win today which I missed due to work but its just the tonic after Tuesdays disappointment and after Hearts slip up at Inverness today it brings us to within 6 points of the Jambo's and on course for the Champions League qualifying berth for next season. It is encouraging too that the team had the resolve, the character and the quality to bounce back in emphatic style and we can only hope that this result is a springboard to go on a good run between now and the end of the season. There is only 9 games left and 27 points up for grabs and with all the teams at the top seemingly able to take points off each other it could just get extremely interesting come the end of the season.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend folks.

Killie Tomorrow. - March 10/2006

Friday then and its back to reality with a bump for the Gers. Not only is there another must win game against Kilmarnock but there is a UEFA charge hanging over Rangers as well due to alleged bigoted chanting at Ibrox in the first leg of the Villareal tie as well as the coach window incident.

So the weekend's SPL football has the potential to be a very interesting weekend with us taking on 5th placed Killie, Celtic playing Hibs on Sunday and the Jambo's taking on the Caley Jags in Inverness. We have a great chance to peg Hearts back to a 5 point lead as Inverness is a very tough place to go and get a positive result and I can see Inverness winning that one or at least getting a draw out of it. So the impetus is on the Gers to put in a barnstorming performance on Saturday and get back into the swing of things in the SPL or we can kiss goodbye to Champions League football next season let alone the UEFA cup. Hopefully Hibs and Celtic will draw giving us slightly more breathing space in 2rd should we win tomorrow although I'd be happy with a Hibs win for obvious reasons.

With Prso coming back after suspension in Europe and Stevie Smith returning after illness it is a full strength squad that is available to Eck and this is the team I feel he should pick bearing in mind the midweek exertions.

Wattereus

Hutton Rodriguez Kyrgiakos Smith

Burke Ferguson Hemdani

Buffel

Prso Boyd

Subs:Klos, Andrews, Murray, Malcolm,G Rae, Lovenkrands, Novo

The team must get their focus and their priorities straight. Bad results and bad performances will mean that Le Guen is unlikely to want to keep these players on and I can imagine that quite a few are eagerly anticipating one of Europes best coaches coming to Rangers and working with them, if I was a Rangers player I know I would be.

As for the UEFA charge, and I am not surprised by it as UEFA are threatening to clamp down on racist and bigoted behaviour at football matches and several clubs have received-quite rightly-fines for this. I am surprised it has taken UEFA this long to potentially punish Rangers for this as the chanting and behaviour at Ibrox at times is simply deplorable and has no place in the 21st century and these knuckle draggers who besmirch the clubs reputation need to take a long look at themselves especially if we get banned from Europe or have to play matches behind closed doors. Of course I have heard the argument "We pay good money to come to Ibrox, we should be allowed to do what we want."Well, no actually, when your behaviour has the potential for the club to lose money or respect then you have no right to behave like that at Ibrox and if you want to sing bigoted songs then fuck off and do it elsewhere . There is a major problem with this but it should be remembered that the vast majority of Rangers fans are decent, tolerant people who are there for the football and hold no truck with bigotry, sectarianism and all that nonsense. Having said all that it is also time UEFA dealt with the racism problem in Italy and Spain with the monkey chants and Nazi salutes but will they? Will they hell there is too much TV generated in those countries and UEFA don't want to lose out on that and they will always have one rule for the continental clubs and another for British clubs and you only have to look at refereeing decisions and disciplinary action to see what goes on in the corridors of power.

Ok so rant over enjoy your Friday night and the football this weekend. Heres hoping for a major case of bouncebackability.

JJB and PLG - March 9/2006

So its been an interesting 24 hours for the Gers with the announcement about JJB taking over the clubs merchandising portfolio, the fall out from the ticket fiasco and this morning with Le Guen seemingly on the verge of joining Rangers its almost enough to make you forget about events on the pitch on Tuesday night.

I am not sure if I am overly happy about the JJB deal as I feel that this is a short term fix as we will lose out on revenue from the Rangers shops and as well as that there will be job losses as well and it will be harsh on those especially at the Rangers shops that have been open form many years mind you I suppose the club will be generous with any redundancy packages and it has not been confirmed how many Rangers shops will close. The deal though that gives the club a one off payment of 18 million punds plus 3 million a year over the next 10 years is quite a good one and the funds from that plus money from our heroic Champions League campaign will go towards buying some new players of genuine quality instead of scrabbling around for the cast-offs as we have done in recent seasons. With Le Guen taking charge we will have more of a chance of signing a better quality of player as has been stated by at least two of Le Guens former proteges.

Moving swiftly on then and the ticket fiasco the other night was totally avoidable. The Villareal policy of selling discounted tickets was always going to end in a touting fiasco and to me Villareal knew that was going to happen and still they went ahead and sold the tickets dirt cheap. In my view they should be thrown out of the Champions League(to be replaced by the team that they knocked out...whoever that was!) and banned for next season. A bit harsh that may sound especially as I was saying how good it was that Rangers fans went out there in force and in all areas of the ground with no trouble , but what would have happened if we had another Hillsborough style tragedy? Is that what is going to have to happen before UEFA sort this type of thing out? By taking this harsh measure UEFA will be sending out a tough message and maybe it will force the Spanish football authorities to take their heads out of the sand and do something about this and also the racism problem that is endemnic in Spain just now. Thankfully no Rangers player was subjected to that kind of abuse but the time has come for UEFA to clamp down on the ugly side of Spanish football. You can bet your bottom dollar if it was a British club carrying on like that there would be hell to pay.

So on to Le Guen then and he is apparantly going to announce on French TV on Sunday that he will be the next Rangers manager and it is unclear if he will take over at the end of the season or sooner. Who knows? lets just savour the fact that we have pulled off the managerial coup of the year and concentrate on the chase for 2nd spot.

The Time has Gone - March 8/2006

So it started so well yesterday, wangling the afternoon off work so I could go watch the game and the mood at the RSC here was one of cautious optimism. After the first few minutes it was clear that Rangers were there to put up a show and lie down and die as a team as we have seen far too many times in Europe over the years. The first couple of shots that whistled past the post signalled Rangers intent and when Lovenkrands pounced on a loose following a neat interchange of passes between Lovenkrands and Buffel and Ferguson getting in on the goalkeeper putting him off it was bedlam as the ball hit the back of the net and Rangers fans across the globe celebrated a well conceived goal. All through the first half Rangers played the type of football we know they can play. Pride, passion, skill, good use of the ball and most importantly team work were all on display and Barry Ferguson as he has been in European ties over the years, was the best player on the park by a country mile he showed great awareness and vision and was back to his snarling best and watching him play you would never have guessed that he was not fully fit.Wattereus kept us in it when we got caught on the break and a great through ball put Forlan one on one with the Wattereus and the Mullet stood tall and deflected the shot wide. But still, we outplayed and outthought Villareal in that first half and they couldn't wait to get off the park at half time and my thoughts then was that the game was ours and I was anticipating potential opponents in the quarter finals.

Sadly thought the goal that killed our dreams came not long after half time and it was sloppy defending that allowed Arruaberrana to tap in at the back post, the has been some debate over who should have been marking him and while Hutton had the job of shackling Riquelme in which he did an ok job it should have been Chris Burke tracking back but hindsight is a wonderful thing and it is unfair to start dishing blame out when you consider how well the team played. The only player to not have an outstanding game was Alan Hutton and to be fair he had a mammoth task trying to contain Riquelme and he did an ok job of it once he settled into the game and got over the yellow card he received and when you consider how continental refs are in European competition he was lucky not to be sent off.

Kris Boyds miss will surely haunt him and all Rangers followers for years to come and it was so agonisingly close to putting us through to the quarter finals but then thats another example of the good old glorious failure story that Scotland seems to excell at.
So that is that and Alex McLeish deserves a hell of a lot of praise for taking us this far and getting his tactics spot on last night and if Sunderland think they can lure him to the Championship next season then they'd better think again. McLeish's reputation has been restored now and when he goes at the end of the season he can walk away with his head held high.

So thats yer lot folks another dream gone.

The Time has Come - March 7/2006

So this is it then, the biggest night for Rangers in 13 years and I for one am so nervous about it and my biggest fear is that we collapse and don't do ourselves justice hopefully whatever team Eck puts out can go and do the biz. I believe we can but at the same time the task in hand is a big one to put it mildly. This is the team I would put out if I was Mcleish:

Mullet

Hutton Rodrigues Kyrgiakos Smith

Hemdani

Burke Ricksen Ferguson Murray

Buffel

Lovenkrands

This is going to be very tough but as long as the team and the fans keep believing then anything is possible.

Enjoy the game.

Tomorrow...but today it is silence. - March 4/2006

So its a deafening silence coming out of Ibrox this morning regarding the arrival of Paul Le guen and the club are quite right to be keeping shtum about this as anything which diverts attention away from tomorrows game is an unwelcome distraction for everyone involved. If he is coming which according to the french paper l' Equipe he is then we can look forward to a radical 2 years as that is all he will sign for at the moment but who knows at the end of that 2 years he may decide to stay on and carry on "le revolucion."

So as the club has now jetted out to Spain it is a great sign that the whole squad has travelled in McLeish's words to support the team. This shows that there is camaraderie in the squad but it is quite obvious that it is not the same level as it was during the 9 in a row years but still its good to see everyone there and it looks too that the ground will be mostly be filled with bears and with that kind of support and the pressure more on Villareal than on the rangers then this might just turn into the most satisfying European night in many a long year. The news that Namouchi may miss the game is the only downside so far but remember the fact that he contributed next to nothing in the first leg so it is no great loss and at least Chris Burke seems to be back from the flu so its not all bad news. Whatever happens tomorrow night though at least this has been a season when we have done something in Europe to remember for the right reasons, ok the domestic season hasn't been a great one but after years of watching us dominate in Scotland and achieving the square root of zero in Europe, this has been satisfying in that regard and lets face it we've won more than enough in Scotland and we will win the league and the two cups many more times in the future, who knows how our future European adventures will pan out in the future but for now lets savour what the team has achieved in Europe this season and hope that it ain't over yet.

Two days until Villareal - March 4/2006

Sunday then and due to technicall difficulties with my pc this is first chance I've had to get online. So now we have the Falkirk game out of the way the players can now focus solely on Tuesday and with any luck the flu bug thats been going around has stopped and means we won't be missing any players especially Chris Burke. Yesterday by all accounts Bernard was miles off the pace and one who shouldn't be considered for Tuesday unless the worst happens but lets hope thats not the case and lets also hope that we get shot of Bernard as soon as possible as he was crap at newcastle and he has been crap at rangers too and with Stevie Smith going good guns we have a perfectly adequate replacement for him as well as having Ian Murray.

Last night Villareal won against the second bottom side in Spain, Alaves, 3-2 and that surely must give us hope of not only getting a goal at least but also winning the tie as well. If we do get through then the team I would most like the Gers to face is either Barcelona or AC Milan, to play against one of those at a packed Ibrox would be an amazing experience for everyone and also would earn the club another couple of million as the TV rights for that would be worth an absoloute fortune and thats on top of the kudos of being in the quarter finals and the respect we will have earned just for getting there when bigger clubs than us have failed this season. So heres hoping for that then.

2-1! We Win - March 4/2006

so a hard fought victory today and thanks to STV and Setanta it wasn't broadcast here so I don't know too much about it. One thing that caught my eye was the omission of Buffel from the squad and also Ashikodi was on the bench, hopefully the youngster has got real quality and if so is given the chance to get a regular game. So it sets things up nicely for Tuesday and if we get a lucky break then as we did today with the og then that will be one more step to the final. Ok I can dream but surely thats one of the great things about being a football fan.
Enjoy your Saturday night.

Falkirk Tomorrow - March 3/2006

Ok so its Friday and the Falkirk game is tomorrow at the Falkirk stadium-by the way I wonder how long it took them to come up with that name-anyone down to business and again I am calling for Ferguson not to be in the starting 11 due to his injury and the faqct remains that we have other options and in carrying the injury Fergie is not as much use to us as he should be. So here is my starting 11.

Mullet

Hutton Rodriguez Kyrgiakos Smith

Burke Hemdani Ricksen

Buffel

Boyd Prso

Subs:Klos, Andrews, Murray, G Rae, Lovenkrands, Malcolm, Novo

This is a must win game and a chance to put some daylight between ourselves and Hibs who welcome Dundee Utd tomorrow there is no excuse for a piss poor performance and the team will know that they are playing for a place in some game thats happening on Tuesday but I forget who we're playing and what the significance is......

Heres hoping for a good weekend

Scotland Woes - March 2/2006

Last nights Scotland result must surely have convinced Walter Smith that there are players in the team who shouldn't be there and those that shouldn't. Players like David Weir for example, he was never that great anyway and at 35 he is way over the hill and in a friendly you should be looking to the future, ok Steven Caldwell replaced him after 56 minutes but theres another one who shouldn't be anywhere near the squad as he is a poor player playing at a poor club who have won only 2 league games this season and I realise that Sunderland have no money to spend but come on he is at best a decent player in the Championship but a very poor premiership player. One guy who was in the squad but didn't get on was Russell Cadger, oops, sorry, Anderson who is a pretty good defender and to me has always looked solid and assured when he has played for Scotland and there was defenitely a missed opportunity there.

Christian Dailly's time as well must surely be up too and while I applaud him on being a great servant for Scotland over the years he doesn't get many games for West Ham and when he is on the ball he looks as uncomfortable as a bed made out of broken glass and he has almost no pace and his distribution ain't up to much though and neither is his tackling. Graham Alexander at left wing back? Do me a favour! He is a right back and by all accounts he was looking uncomfortable out there and in any case Ian Murray should have played there and is younger as well and another one we need to see a bit more of at international level to see if he is up to it, which in my opinion he isn't. Sorry if that sounds disloyal as he is a Rangers player but I don't think he's good enough to play for Rangers we should be looking at better players than him and while he is a good squad player to have due to his versatility he is certainly not first team pick material. But having said all that with the circumstances Scotland are in he should have been at left wing back last night.

So who else is there that could come in then? The first name that springs to mind is Chris Burke and if he keeps up the form that he is in then it is surely going to lead to a Scotland call up with caps aplenty to follow, guys like Alan Hutton, Scott Brown, Kris Boyd, Kevin Thomson, Stephen McManus and Gavin Rae once he gets into his stride again are also worth giving a chance to and again this has been a missed opportunity for Scotland. Here is my Scotland squad anyway.

Gordon

McNamara Webster Pressley Naysmith

Burke Ferguson Fletcher Quashie

Mcfadden

Miller

Subs. Combe, Anderson, Murray, Hartley, Riordan, O'Connor, Boyd

I realise it wasn't the strongest Scotland squad as there were one or two call offs but even still its still a scandal to lose that heavily especially at Hampden but maybe thats a game that should have been played elsewhere like Aberdeen for example as it was never going to be a particularly well attended game the crowd would have filled Pittodrie. But all things said it is better to get losses out of the way in Friendly matches than losing competitive matches which is something that sadly Scotland may just do in the Euro 2008 qualifying considering the opposition.

Oh well what do you do?

A Couple Pieces of News - March 1/2006

A couple of pieces of news to talk about today and the news that Barry Ferguson is going to delay an operation he needs is not good news for him or the club. As I have said a few times it is detrimental to him and the club playing through injury and his performances have been sub standard on a consistent basis this season and by playing through this injury he is doing no one any favours. He should have the operation after the Villareal game whether we get knocked out or not. Gavin Rae is one replacement as is his namesake Alex and don't forget Namouchi's best position is centre midfield, Ricksen can play there too so we are not short on options and we will manage without him.

Patrick Muller has come out and said that he would like to join Rangers, if Le Guen does come and Muller joins him then we will have one of Europes best young midfielders I watch a lot of French football and while I think that it is quite dull to watch at times he is one of Lyons stand out players and exactly the type of player we should be looking at signing. He has pace his distribution is excellent and he is a good tackler too and has a good footballing brain on him too. He also said that others who have worked under Le Guen would come to Rangers too as he is so well respected and has a fine track record as a coach and a person so here's hoping that amongst the big announcements next week one of them will be "Le Guen is on his way.

til tomorrow then.....
