Back to Business

The emptiness of the summer period has now ended, with a return to competitive action warmly received by fans desperate to get back to the grind of the SPL season.

With Smith embarking on his first full season since returning in January, hopes are high that he can bestow the club with another league championship and reinstall the side as the rightful kings of the Scottish game. To aid him in his pursuit of this prize, Smith engaged in heavy expenditure and transfer activity over the window period, signing nine new players so far with possibilities of further acquisitions before the August period ends and with it the deadline for new arrivals.

To welcome the start of the domestic season, the final friendly played was a ‘Battle of Britain’ encounter with English giants Chelsea. They not only brought up a Hollywood cast of their top players, but clearly played with intent of winning, for the game was a full-blooded affair and roundly acclaimed as one of the best friendlies played in the UK over the summer. Indeed, England and Chelsea star Frank Lampard lauded the encounter as the best friendly his club had played in, and he expressed his appreciation of the home fans, who mutually expressed plenty to the attacking midfielder.

What was the most impressive aspect of the day though was the fact the Rolls Royce visitors left with their tails between their legs, as the home side simply proved too much for them in a blistering second half where luminaries like Ferguson showed just how good he can be. To completely overshadow the entire opposition midfield, endowed with stars like Makelele, is an extremely worthy feat, even in a friendly. Ferguson did so, and how. Two goals from fringe players Novo and Sebo sent the Govan faithful home in a very good mood indeed as did a clean sheet aided by the Spanish stopper Cuellar who, as the old cliché goes, contained with great ease one of the best strikers in the world in Drogba. He also kept Shevchenko out of the game equally as effortlessly.

Yes, this £2.7M signing from Osasuna is proving to be a simply fantastic purchase, and while few fans knew a great deal about him prior to his arrival, they do now, and he is being heralded as one of the greatest signings we have enjoyed in our recent past. Furthermore, his start to the SPL season has pretty much displayed the way he means to continue.

On that note, it is worth pointing out just how solid this Rangers side is looking. Two clean sheets in the SPL out of two, with five goals scored. Consequently the team are sitting pretty at the top of the table with two wins out of two, while bitter rivals Celtic stuttered to a win and a draw, both of which came from inept displays.

It is early days in the SPL, but add to that fine start in the league two further clean sheets and victories in the Champions League tie V FK Zeta then you begin to see this side is slowly looking like the real deal who have a genuine chance of recapturing the SPL crown.
